Teacher workforce – quality and quantity

Teacher supply has always been a significant issue for government; and this is exacerbated given the strength of evidence that teacher quality is the biggest factor in school improvement. Given the issues challenging the school sector at present that could impact on supply (e.g. changes to ITE provision and grades required for course entry; increasing pupils numbers in the primary sector), the project seeks to assess current and future patterns in terms of any potential supply crisis, and to provide thought-leadership concerning recruitment strategies.

Conducted by Professor John Howson, and based on quantitative analysis of ITE entry and staff recruitment data, the research also includes survey data from head teachers exploring what they will require in their teaching staff for the future.
